Best time to visit for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra
Q. When is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra starting and what is the best time to go?
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, one of the most popular pilgrimages in India, takes place from May to September. The peak season is June, but travellers might face sunburn or other heat allergies due to extreme hot weather. The rainy season is July to mid-August, but fewer yatris visit during this time. The Shravan month is preferred for the darshan of Kailash Parvat and Mansarovar Jheel. Similarly, September is the best time to complete the Mount Kailash trek. Bookings for 2026 are ongoing, coinciding with the Tibetan Horse Year, as per the Tibetan zodiac calendar and the Chinese calendar. It is one of the auspicious years, where 1 Parikrama of Kailash is equivalent to 13 Parikramas of Kailash.
Q. Which weather is most favourable for Mount Kailash Parikrama?
The weather is unpredictable at Kailash; however, many pilgrims prefer September as the best month to go for Kailash Parikrama because the weather is pleasant and there is almost a moderate rush. The parikrama of Lake Mansarovar can be done in all the months from May to September.
Q. How does rainy season affect the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
The rainy season in the Kailash Mansarovar region occurs between July to mid-August. However, the Kailash yatra is not much affected by the rain except for a few instances of delay. This season sees a good number of yatris visiting Mansarovar Lake and Kailash Parbat, because it is the holy month of Shravan. Since there is no greenery in the area, rain showers last for only a few minutes, but it is compulsory to carry a raincoat.
Q. What is the temperature at Lake Mansarovar and during Mount Kailash Parikrama?
The temperature and weather in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra are not fixed, and you will find major variations while entering the Tibetan region of the Mansarovar. Generally, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra temperature does not fall to minus, and it ranges between 15 to 20 degrees Celsius during the day, and at night, the temperature is between 5 to 9 degrees Celsius.
However, the weather at Kailash Mansarovar is slightly unpredictable, and one must carry their summer, winter, and rainy season clothes. Pilgrims must be properly dressed according to the weather. We provide a down jacket to all the yatris travelling with us on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It is also advisable to carry good woollens for layering, and one must ensure to cover their head to avoid getting a cold.
Q. Do we need to trek in snow during Mount Kailash Yatra?
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra takes place in summer from May to September, when there is no snow in the area, hence you do not have to trek on snow. There is only one point from Dhirapuk to Dolma La Pass on Day 2 of Mount Kailash Parikrama, where one can find snow while going uphill.
If you visit in May, you can see glaciers around Mount Kailash. In case these glaciers start melting, Mount Kailash parikrama might get halted for some time. Also, the Kailash Parvat Parikrama might not be allowed in May if there is snowfall in the month of April.
Q. How does bad weather impact the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
The weather is mostly unpredictable during Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, but the major impact of bad weather can be seen only in the Nepal region and not in Tibet. It is advisable to take necessary precautions in such conditions.
The helicopter route of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, generally taking place between Nepalgunj and Hilsa, is a little bit affected by bad weather because the flight/ helicopter might get delayed due to less visibility. There is no challenge of landslides, but when rain starts, we stay at the same place where we are and move ahead only when the rain stops.
