Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Eligibility
Q. Where do I need to show our visa during Kailash Yatra?
You can visit the Kailash Mansarovar region only with a group visa, which provides permission to pilgrims to enter the Kailash region of Tibet. Since the entire group enters and exits at the same time from Tibet, you won’t be able to travel to China with this visa.
The group visa will be checked by the Chinese immigration centre at the Nepal-Tibet border, for instance, Hilsa for the helicopter route and Kudari/Keyong for the overland route. Other immigration and customs processes take place at the respective points.
Q. I have a Chinese visa on my passport, can I go for the Kailash Yatra with that?
One cannot undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra without a Chinese visa. A group visa issued by the Chinese Embassy of New Delhi for Indian passport holders, and the Chinese Embassy of Kathmandu for NRIs or non-Indian passport holders, is required for the Kailash Yatra.
The visa issued for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is issued for an entire group and is not stamped or pasted on each pilgrim’s passport. In case you have a Chinese visa on your passport, first, it will be cancelled, and then a Group visa for Kailash Yatra will be issued. After completion of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, you can reapply for a Chinese visa, because an embassy cannot issue two or more visas at a single time.
Q. What is the process for NRIs to apply for Kailash Yatra?
The NRIs or non-Indian passport holders have to reach Nepal, 4-5 working days before the Kailash Yatra starting date, where you will be issued a visa on arrival. Submit your passport to your respective sales representative of the Trip To Temples, who will then apply for a Group Visa for the Kailash Yatra. Q. What is Kailash Yatra permit and visa? Are they both the same?
Kailash Yatra Permit and a visa are two different things required to travel to Kailash Mansarovar. Both the permit and the visa are issued on a strict group basis, i.e., the entire group enters and exits Tibet together. A visa is a document required for any international travel.
Although a visa and Permit for Kailash Mansarovar are issued by the Embassy of China, it is different from the mainland China visa. Kailash Yatra permit and visa are special permissions issued by the Chinese Authority that allow you to travel only to the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

Only after the issuance of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra permit, private tour operators apply for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra visa, taking 4-5 working days. A Kailash Yatra permit can only be applied via authorized travel agencies and not individually.
Q. Which type of visa do we get for Kailash Yatra? Is it sticker pasted or stamped on the passport?
A staple VISA for the entire group is issued by the Chinese embassy, which is neither pasted nor stamped on the passport. The VISA for Kailash Yatra is a sheet of paper on which the name of each group member, along with their nationality, date of birth, and passport number, is mentioned.
Q. Who issues the visa for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
For people travelling from India, the VISA is issued by the Embassy of China in Delhi, and for people travelling from countries other than India, the VISA is issued by the Embassy of China in Kathmandu. Those who are NRIs or have non- Indian passports must reach Kathmandu at least 4-5 days before the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra starting date.
