Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

General Information on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The immigration process at the Nepal-Tibet border is a tedious and time taking process. The Chinese Immigration Authority thoroughly checks your phone, so your phone must not contain photos of the Dalai Lama and no anti-China content. Do not click photos of Chinese authorities. Your fingerprints will be taken but there will be no stamping on your passport. It is essential to follow the instructions of the Immigration officer, Tibetan guide and Chinese army.

Q. Are we allowed to click pictures of Chinese soldiers and the immigration centre in KMY?

It is strictly prohibited to take pictures of Chinese soldiers and the immigration centre. Please refrain from taking their pictures and follow the rules.

You will be seeing the following places during the Kailash yatra:

Rakshastal- It is located to the west of Lake Mansarovar. Rakshastal is a saltwater lake, which means the lake of demons. It is said that the demon king Ravana meditated here and recited the Shiva Tandav Stotram to impress Lord Shiva.

Lake Mansarovar- This is the point where we get the first view of Mount Kailash. It is a freshwater lake that was first envisioned by Lord Brahma and then manifested on Earth.

Yamdwar- One of the most prominent attractions of the Kailash Yatra, Yamdwar is the Gate of Salvation. It is believed that passing through this gate washes away your sins. This is the point from where Mount Kailash Parikrama starts.

Mount Kailash- The main motive to go on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is to get the darshan of the Holy Mountain Kailash. It is believed that Kailash Parvat is the resting abode of Lord Shiva and his family.

Nandi Parvat- Next to Mount Kailash is the Nandi Parvat. Nandi Ji is believed to be the Vehicle (Vahan) of Lord Shiva, so wherever there is Lord Shiva, Nandi Ji will be there. The Nandi Parvat is a mountain in the shape of Nandi Ji.

Dhirapuk- After completing the first day of Parikrama of Mount Kailash, we reach Dhirapuk. It is the place that gives the most beautiful view of Mount Kailash between the two other mountains. One can spot the Golden Kailash in the morning from this point.

Shiva Sthal- On the second day of Mount Kailash Parikrama, we get to see Shiva Sthal, which is the place where people donate clothes and ornaments, as it is said that if you donate something at Shivasthal, you will get it in your next life.

Dolma La Pass- This is the highest point of the Kailash Parikrama, which is situated at an elevation of 6800 meters above sea level. You get to visit Dolma La pass on the second day of Mount Kailash Parikrama.

Gaurikund- It is a perfectly round-shaped lake just ahead of Dolma La Pass and is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. It is said to be the lake in which Mata Parvati used to take a bath and created Lord Ganesha.

Also, you should keep in mind that there won't be any advanced level of facility in the Kailash Mansarovar, Tibet region, as a very basic level accommodation facility and simple food options are available. Security is not a major concern during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The destination is altogether very safe, as Kailash Mansarovar is a pilgrimage where travellers from decent families with only sacred intentions and devotion towards Lord Shiva undertake this pious yatra. Thus, ladies, senior citizens, or those who are travelling alone, travel securely throughout the Kailash region.

It takes more time while going and less time while returning on the same route because;

i) We move from low altitude to higher altitude slowly by acclimatizing to the weather, while trekking upwards.

ii) We stop by multiple tourist attraction spots en route, while going upwards, which involves sightseeing, hence taking more time than returning from Kailash Yatra

You will get plenty of picturesque spots to click photos on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra; however, clicking pictures of Chinese soldiers and the immigration centre is strictly prohibited.

The shopkeepers in Tibet speak their local language. They use calculators to communicate with tourists, where they type the product cost, and if you do not agree with the price quoted, you can bargain with your price quotation by typing it on the calculator. In this way, negotiation takes place between the customer and the shopkeeper. You can also take help of the Tibetan guide while bargaining.

It entirely depends on your preference. However, most pilgrims prefer starting their Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Lucknow, making it the most popular route. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by road starts only from Kathmandu, as this route has an accessible and well-maintained infrastructure, and is also the cheapest route for the Kailash yatra. However, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Helicopter starts from both Lucknow and Kathmandu, making It the most popular route.

Any inflammable objects such as matchstick, ghee, etc and sharp objects such as knives, scissors, etc are not allowed on the flight/ helicopters during the Kailash Yatra. Also, portable Oxygen cylinder is also not allowed in helicopter, so it is better to purchase one in Tibet.

The Central Government of India does not offer subsidies on any pilgrimage tour. However, different state governments of India offer subsidies for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
