Medical facilities in Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Q. Will there be any permanent doctor with the Kailash Yatra group?
A permanent doctor cannot be available all the time with the Kailash Yatra group, due to the cost of deploying a doctor and the unavailability of proper medical care in that high-altitude, remote region of Kailash. Although many groups have doctors who join as pilgrims and assist when needed. Reaching such a high altitude can cause problems, especially when someone is not physically fit, taking stress, not eating properly, or not taking prescribed medicines. We provide guidance and instructions for physical and mental stability as well as our guides and sherpas are well-trained to handle emergencies. In the most extreme situations, our priority lies in bringing the yatri to a lower altitude, and if the problem persists, they're taken to the hospital. Basic medical facilities are available at various locations on the Kailash Mansarovar route, but any extra transportation or medical charges are not included in the package and must be borne by pilgrims themselves.
Q. Where can I find hospitals on the Kailash Yatra route? Is treatment at these hospitals costly? expensive? Who bears the cost of any hospitalization if it's an emergency during Kailash Yatra?
More often, circumstances are in control, so hospital care is barely needed; but if it is so, hospitals are located at Purang town (helicopter route), Kyirong, and Saga (overland route). Since there are currently no medical facilities along the Nyalam route (alternate route, after the Kyirong bridge collapse), one must relocate to Purang in the event of an emergency. The cost and evacuation fees must be borne by the pilgrim. Moreover, hospitals along your Kailash Yatra route offer basic and affordable medical care.
Q. What happens in case of any health issue or evacuation? What is the rescue/evacuation procedure during Kailash Parikrama?
The tour guides and sherpas are experienced in handling emergencies; an oximeter and an oxygen cylinder are available with our tour guide at all stops. It is recommended that pilgrims purchase a portable oxygen cylinder for emergencies during travel. Furthermore, your health status is assessed at Manasarovar Lake before you proceed for Mount Kailash Parikrama. If unwell, the group leader will check the oxygen level, and then the trekking guidelines will be provided accordingly. Medical evacuation is only possible on day 1, but eventually, pilgrims must be physically fit and should maintain an intact oxygen level throughout. Medical and evacuation charges, as well as the VISA separation charge, must be paid if taken to Nepal.
Q. Which equipments and medicines do guides carry on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
The guides carry basic medical kits along with oximeters during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Oxygen cylinders are available at accommodation points for emergency usage. We advise customers to purchase a portable oxygen cylinder and carry their regular medicines, if any, prescribed by their doctor, like for controlling blood pressure, sugar levels, etc.
Q. Who will support pilgrims in the medical or evacuation process during Kailash Yatra?
Our responsible team consists of a Tibetan Guide, a Nepali guide, and a Tour manager who are highly dedicated to delivering the best service. The Tibetan guide is the sole responsible person for the Tibetan region travel, as they are well-connected with all the Tibetan departments and facilitation centres. The Nepali guide acts as a link between pilgrims and Tibetan guides, they help yatris get instructions from the Tibetan guide. The Tour Manager is an additional support from India who takes care of all your emergencies and requirements throughout, who's mostly connected with our office in India for coordination, rescue, and other necessary support.
Q. What are the physical activities one should follow while planning for Kailash Yatra? What precautions should one take before and during the Kailash Yatra?
Completing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra or visiting Mount Kailash is mainly driven by the willpower of the pilgrims. However, we can't deny the fact that a basic fitness level is required for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It is advised to start preparing for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra at least 1 to 2 months before the yatra date. Some of the precautions that one can take are:
- Start practising walking for a few kilometres.
- Practising breathing exercises such as pranayam and anulom-vilom is recommended.
- During the Kailash Yatra, wear warm clothes, cover your head and ears properly, and eat & drink well.
- Do not have an empty stomach; keep your stomach full to avoid sickness. Take proper meals timely even if you don’t feel like having them. Trip To Temples serves 3 times pure vegetarian meals along with soup and tea.
- Don’t skip your regular medicine prescribed by your doctor (if any), take them on time.
- Keep your mental state calm. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a different type of pilgrimage with limited infrastructure, so do not get indulged in discussions about the Chinese Authority or other things. It may increase your stress level, further resulting in High blood pressure and related complications. It is better to keep calm and chant Om Namah Shivay in your mind.
- Don’t be adamant about performing the Mount Kailash parikrama; make decisions according to your health.
- While doing Mount Kailash Kora (Parikrama), don’t get into a race or walk very fast. Everyone has their own pace, and it is better to stick to yours.
- Take a long breath and hold it for a few seconds to increase the Oxygen level. Get your Oxygen level checked on a regular basis with an oximeter available with the tour guide.
- Must purchase a cotton mask and 1-2 portable oxygen cans when you enter Tibet. A cotton mask saves the throat from getting dry. Portable oxygen canisters are helpful at high altitudes, especially during Mount Kailash Parikrama.
Q. Are there dangerous animals around Mount Kailash?
There are no dangerous animals around Mount Kailash. However, there are wild dogs around the Lake Mansarovar region, so be aware of them. Do not go alone at night; walk in groups for everyone's safety.
Q. What is a Gamow bag? Is it available in Kailash Yatra?
A Gamow bag is an inflatable pressure bag used at high altitudes to prevent altitude sickness. It looks similar to a sleeping bag. It is big enough to fit a person inside to maintain atmospheric pressure, but has certain drawbacks.
Q. What happens if any casualty occurs during the Kailash Yatra?
We take all the necessary precautions, take efforts to minimize the life risk, and execute the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in the best possible way. However, if any casualty occurs, our team looks after the situation. The family of the deceased is informed, and whatever decision is taken by them, we agree to fulfil it. In case the family is willing to bring back the body by paying the evacuation charge, then we will make sure to complete all the documentation work and bring back their body to India and hand it over to the family. In case the family asks to complete the last rites in Tibet/Nepal itself, it is taken care of by Trip To Temples.
Q. What is the visa separation charge in Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, if there's a case of medical emergency?
Visa separation occurs rarely, because everyone in the group is granted a visa for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, allowing them to enter and exit Tibet together. If any of the group members needs to leave Tibet before others in the event of an emergency, their name is removed from the group visa list, and a 'Visa Separation Charge' must be paid by the traveller themselves. The cost of transportation to Hilsa border and a visa separation fee ranges approximately between 800 and 1000 Yuan per person.
