Why is Mount of Kailash Unclimbable? 

The Holy Kailash Mountain or Kailash Parvat is a mysterious mountain with an unbelievable history, full of secrets that none can find. Soaring at a height of 22030 ft above sea level, Kailash Mountain is of great significance to Hinduism and witnesses a large crowd every year for Kailash Yatra with people coming from all over the world. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is not just a journey for the believers, in fact, it is a yatra of a lifetime. It is commonly believed that people who get the opportunity to visit Kalash are not there because they decided they want to be there but they have been called by their Lord Shiva to worship him. 

One might wonder that even at such high altitudes how can people climb Kailash? Well, the truth is you cannot climb Kailash Parvat, the maximum altitude at which one can reach is the Dolma La Pass which is approximately 18000 ft above sea level. One reaches Dolma La Pass on the second day of Kailash parikrama.

Who Climbed Mt Kailash?

Upon hearing the story and the mystery of Kailash Parvat, several questions might pop up in your mind, one of which is if anyone has ever climbed the Holy Mountain or is it just impossible to even think about it. Interestingly several people have tried to summit Mount Kailash but none of them have been successful except for Milarepa. Milarepa was a Tibetan sage of the 11th Century, who wrote poems and songs to spread Buddhist teachings and Buddhism. Milarepa, was quite popular during his time because he did the impossible which none of the climbers could do. 
With his name forever etched in the history of Kailash, one should also know that Milarepa was a murderer before he turned into a saint and from that time onwards he started teaching Buddhism throughout the Tibetan Plateau.
Coming back from climbing the holy mountain was a miracle in itself and it is believed that Milarepa found some secrets that the world should not know, due to which he asked others not to climb the holy mountain, one because it was impossible for an ordinary man to do so and Milarepa was no ordinary man and two because it disturbs the God resting there. It is believed that Mount Kailash is the holy abode of Lord Shiva and he is meditating over there and out of respect one should not think about climbing it just like we don’t climb temples because that doesn’t make sense and is also disrespectful if one tries to do so. After all it is a place of worship.

Milarepa, being the only person to ever reach the peak of Mount Kailash startled other climbers. Due to which several number of people tried climbing the holy mountain because if one person can then why not others? There have been several failed attempts, some of the climbers died during the summit others went missing and some mysteriously vanished into thin air. However, no one knows what happened to them and how they disappeared. 
An interesting fact about Kailash Mountain is that time moves faster than usual, making your nails and hair grow faster when you are at the mountain. Weather forecast cannot be done because the weather condition changes within seconds and compasses don’t work. Mount Kailash with all its majestic glory is 6638 meters above sea level and Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world stands at an elevation of 8848 meters above sea level and somehow numerous people climb Mount Everest every year but only one person has been able to climb Mount Kailash till now. Surprising, isn’t it?

Mount Kailash Climbers Who Failed 

Curious Mountaineers and hardcore trekkers took it as a challenge to climb the holy mountain, all resulting in failed attempts and in most cases death. 
English Mountaineers Hugh and Wilson studied and researched Kailash Mountain and found an easy way to summit the mountain, however, heavy snowfall and unpredictable events poured water on their plans. 
Reinhold Messner is a well-known mountaineer from Italy, who is the first one to climb all 14 tallest peaks standing at an elevation of more than 26000ft above sea level. He was no ordinary trekker but when asked to climb Mount Kailash he refused, probably because he knew that it was not possible. Not many people are aware of the fact that Messner was asked by the Chinese Authority to climb Mount Kailash to which he refused and from that time onwards, China banned climbing on Kailash because clearly, it was beyond the powers of ordinary men.

The death of four scientists after their failed attempt to summit the mountain, took the world by surprise. These four very eager scientists planned to climb the mountain, however, a Tibetan Lama advised them not to proceed further with the plan, which eventually lead to the scientists abandoning the plan and carrying on with their lives. The story doesn’t end here, the surprising fact is that all these scientists who tried to climb the sacred mountain died within two years.
There have been several cases but the most interesting and terrifying case is that of the Siberian Mountaineers, who like everyone else wanted to summit Kailash Parvat but they had no idea what they had in store for them. They started climbing the mountain but at a certain point, the climbers realized that they have aged and become old, due to which they had to return back. These youngsters who started climbing the mountain returned back and aged a few decades, which in itself is a miracle. Within a year, strangely these mountaineers died of old age, proving the fact that time moves faster at Kailash Mountain and also gives suspicion of time travel.

All these stories bring us to the question that “Who can climb Mount Kailash?” 
The answer to that is in a statement by Herbert Titchy, an Australian climber who once said, “Only a man entirely free of sin is able to climb Kailash. And he wouldn’t have to actually scale the sheer walls of ice to do it – instead, he would just turn himself into a bird and fly to the summit.”
