Kashi (Varanasi) & Its Spiritual Significance

The Sanskrit root kash, which means "to shine," is where the word "Kashi" comes from. This makes it the "City of Light" that gives spiritual light. The Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana says that Varanasi is the oldest city in the world. Lord Shiva built it at the beginning of time. People believe that the city is not on the ground of the mortal world, but is instead held up by Lord Shiva's Trident (Trishul). This holy height makes it a safe place that can't be touched by time or destruction. The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is the city's spiritual heart. Lord Shiva, the King of the Universe, lives there. People say that just one breath in this holy place can free you from Karma and lead you to Moksha.

The Goddess Ganga is a big part of Kashi's mythology. People say that the river flows north (Uttravahini) here to honour Lord Shiva's home. The city's 84 ghats, including the famous Manikarnika, are places where the physical and spiritual worlds come together. People believe that Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ears of the dead at Manikarnika to save them. Kaal Bhairav, the scary "Kotwal" or divine inspector of Kashi, is in charge of protecting this holy land. Pilgrims must get his permission before they can really enter the city. Kashi is still the best place for people who want to find the truth. It has the Vedic echoes of the Dashashwamedh Ghat and the Buddhist silence of nearby Sarnath.
