Bhimashankar & Its Spiritual Significance

Shankar, another name for Lord Shiva, and Bhima, an imposing demon mentioned in Hindu texts, are the sources of the name "Bhimashankar." According to tradition, Bhima was the son of Kumbhakarna and had achieved immense power by means of meditation. He imprisoned King Sudakshina, a famous Shiva bhakt, and started torturing sages and devotees while intoxicated with power. Lord Shiva arrived here in a powerful form, destroyed Bhima, and brought about peace since he was distressed by their suffering. The Bhima River, which still flows through the area, is thought to have originated from Lord Shiva's perspiration after he transformed into a Jyotirlinga during the battle.

Mentioned in the Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana, Bhimashankar holds huge spiritual importance. Sincere prayers offered here are said to help devotees overcome fear, inner difficulties, and negative energy.
