Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are believed to be millions of years old, although their exact geological ages are still uncertain. Both were shaped during the formation and uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. Located close to each other in Tibet, Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake are also sacred pilgrimage sites in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon, with each tradition sharing its own account of their origin and significance.
