Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: Must-Know Trekking Tips

Ever felt an urge to travel to far-distant places—where you can experience tranquility and soft whispers of nature? Well, if you are seeking calmness and a peaceful retreat, fly off to the mountains. And what can be greater than soaking in the spiritual oasis of Mount Kailash? The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is perfect for mountain buffs as no other place can make one feel as blessed and divine as the holy Mount Kailash. Undoubtedly, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra trek is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It almost feels like a journey that has miles to cover but is spiritually enriching.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra—the abode of Lord Shiva is every pilgrim’s dream. It’s a multi-day trek yatra that demands great devotion and patience. The overland route of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a little longer. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand is entirely by a trek of about 250 km that takes almost 24 days.

Since it’s a high-altitude yatra and Mount Kailash is located in a remote region, pilgrims are advised to plan their journey well in advance. Careful planning mitigates the risk of accidents during the journey. Whether it’s carrying nutritious meals or wearing comfortable woolens, prioritizing your wellness and safety remains important.

We have pulled together a few points to be remembered during Kailash Yatra Treks.

  • Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a high-altitude yatra. The high-altitude and multi-day treks may cause breathlessness, altitude sickness, or dizziness in respiratory patients. Therefore, we advise asthmatic patients or individuals with respiratory illness to not take up the yatra.
  • The weather remains harsh and cool at Kailash Mansarovar and at the stopovers of the yatra. Drinking cold water can cause bloating of the stomach or other gut issues. We recommend that travellers drink lukewarm water during the trekking to avoid any health complications.
  • Meals remain included in the tour package. You can carry light and nutritious snacks such as chips, wafers, nuts, dry fruits, chickpeas, and peanuts to avoid hunger pangs and cravings.
  • Carry medicines, camera, mobile, power bank, trekking pole, medicines prescribed by a physician, hat, goggles, extra socks, and oximeter
  • Trekking requires great physical fitness and overall health wellness as well. Keep a good quality trekking pole. For effortless trekking, we recommend you practice breathing exercises and physical activities to avoid muscle cramps and lethargy.
  • A travel insurance policy safeguards a traveller against the injury, or emergency situation, if any. It covers emergency evacuation, trip cancellations, and accidents in high-altitude regions.
  • The yatra involves travelling to Nepal and Tibet where Indian currency is not functional and acceptable. Try arranging the Chinese Yuan, which can be exchanged in the countries for their native currencies. A travel agency can help you with that.
  • Packing easy-to-carry clothes helps you travel hassle-free. Carrying heavy luggage can make your journey tiresome and boring.
  • While you will do the parikrama of Mount Kailash, you may start feeling breathing issues. In case you are unwell, you are advised to inform and get help from your tour manager.
  • Practice deep breathing exercises to reduce anxiety and stress.
  • It is advisable to undertake the trek-based route when you are physically fit and do not have any chronic illness. We recommend you do a prior health checkup before the yatra.
  • We recommend you walk slowly and do not rush while trekking through the rugged terrains and rocky grasslands.
  • Eat nutritious food throughout the yatra. Avoid eating junk food or heavy meals.
Keep yourself hydrated throughout the trip.

  • Drink plenty of water as one will have to trek along the rugged terrains.

  • Do not leave the group while trekking. Doing so may cause unnecessary panic and one may even lose the way while trekking.
