Located at an altitude of 3,888 meters in Jammu & Kashmir, the Amarnath Cave houses the sacred Ice Shivling, believed to be self-originated.
The ice lingam is believed to form naturally every year as water drips from the ceiling & freezes.
According to ancient Hindu text, Lord Shiva narrated the ‘Amar Katha’ to Maa Parvati in this cave, with only two pigeons overhearing the tale, believed to reside there still.
Amarnath Yatra opens for pilgrimage every year in the month of Shravan (July & August) & thousands of devotees take up this difficult trek to seek the blessing of Baba Bholenath.
The Amarnath Yatra involves a trek through two routes; Baltal Route- short but steep (14 km) & Pahalgam route- scenic but longer (36 km). Helicopter services are also available.
The naturally formed Ice Shivling rises & falls with the moon's phases, symbolizing Shiva’s eternal presence in the Himalayas.
The yatra is a blend of spiritual awakening and endurance as thousands of pilgrims bear the extreme cold and rugged terrain to seek Baba Barfani’s blessings.
